March 31, 2011 Celebrate!

My class is preparing to celebrate the end of the slice of life challenge tomorrow.  We’ll discuss how it felt to write every day and I’ll have them write down what really mattered to them. A reflection. Then they will have a chance to eat slices of things we chose to bring for tomorrow.  Things like: slices of pizza, cake, oranges, apples, kiwi, bananas, and pineapple.

Life is like that.  It is mixed up and crazy. You can’t count on everything being alike or the same.  We would get bored if it was always the same.

I found that in writing everyday too.  It can be difficult.  I read another person’s slice this morning and he was writing about “last”.  He used song titles and other words but he used a phrase I would like to repeat because it stuck with me; “Words and phrases tumbled around in my brain, like clothes in a dryer.”  http://livinglifetwice-alwrite.blogspot.com  Sometimes it worked out that way and other times it was more difficult, like a roadblock for a train that never ended.

I found myself going back to my Writer’s notebooks that I started when I began teaching writing workshop that Ruth from Two Writing Teachers mentored me through. What a blessing she was! And is!  I have learned so much from her and this slice of life challenge. Perhaps I should hold all that until tomorrow. J

Life is a celebration too!  Celebrate!  Enjoy your slice!  Happy Slicing! J I’ll miss you! Thanks to all who have written comments on my slices and my students’ slices.  They just loved it!  I have two to add today!  It is really appreciated! God bless you!

    Well, I liked all that you said-absolutely correct! But I especially loved that you will celebrate with your students by enjoying 'slices' of many kinds of food-just as writing becomes-many kinds of tastes, textures, colors... Your creativity is priceless & probably quite appreciated by your students. Happy slicing day!

    Sue, this is the best post ever! It says so many heartfelt feelings that I can identify with during this month. Kudos to Ruth--yes!!! Where would be without her!! I love your celebration theme--slices to eat and share!!! Your class will truly remember this in years to come, and you may have a reached a true and future author!!! Congratulations to you and your class!

Sink or swim could mean the same to many people and to others different meanings. How profound! I think in writing, to sink or swim would be to just get started and not stop.  What have you got to lose?    I went back to college when I was 39 years old to get my English degree.  I had a B.S. from college in Home Economics at that time, but was unable to find a teaching job so thought I'd add to my license so I could teach. Try going back to school with students who are approximately twenty years younger than you.  Talk about a challenge. Now there's one!   Boy, was I enthused!  They breathed life right back into me.  Most of them were very insightful and I learned to get right in with them. To cut a long story short, they would call me and I called them, and we made it through. The toughest part was creative writing.   I hadn't written in years.  No one had actually taught me to write.  The professor then wasn't teaching me either.  It was "sink or swim"

March 1, 2012 Was I blown in?

As I lay in my bed yesterday,  I could hear the wind. It made me think about what I know about the wind. I can see it, I can hear it, it can touch me, but I can't touch it! There's, the cold blustery wind in Winter, The warm Summer breeze that goes by The casual breeze that carries the smoke from the fires of leaves burning in the Fall. Those are the “fun” winds. The damaging winds of tornadoes, tsunamis, and hurricanes can hurt property and people. Hopefully we won't have that this year. A little abrupt but I need to stop.  Happy Slicing! :o)
