April 5, 2011 My first Tues. Slice Baby Eagles

This is my first time slicing for the Slice of Life Tuesday.  I don’t start anything small, at least that is what my husband tells me.  I had to go for the Slice of Life Challenge for the month of March 2011.  Started this blog and began my first writing every day, not just one day but everyday and now it has become a habit that I don’t want to break

I watched a live webcam this morning on the internet that was streaming baby eagles in a nest.  It was beyond amazing how a bird that is so majestic soaring in the sky, swoops down to take an animal for food, but can be so gentle in a nest of baby fledglings.

I couldn’t pull myself away.  I understand the nest was not without drama the day before.  Apparently one of the eagles was cleaning out the nest by picking out the egg shells and accidentally picked up one of the fledglings and pushed it to the edge of the nest and almost knocked it out.  Then it had quite a time climbing to the center to be back under the eagle that was sitting on the nest.  It must have been a dramatic moment.

It’s about that dramatic for me when a student doesn’t comprehend whatever I am trying to teach.  Perhaps I am exaggerating but I am sincere in wanting each one to succeed.  Without the skills to read and write, it will be difficult to be successful in what ever career they choose.

So as I embark on my first Slice of Life Tuesday, I am committed to write about life and how I am instructing my students to become the best that they can be!  Happy Slicing! J

    What a great way to connect your teaching, helping the tiny eaglet/child into the nest of reading/writing. I think that could be very inspiring to you all the year long. It is wonderful how animals care for their young. Thanks for sharing!

    I love how you described your feelings while watching this...

    To me it is amazing how this site has connected with so many people! The nest is only 20 miles or so from where I live and the web cam has been around for awhile. But this year it has taken off--it is on the news, on facebook and twitter...everywhere

    I saw the announcement of the webcam but haven't seen anymore since. And now a another blogger lives close to the webcam--smaller world again. It is becoming smaller and sometimes that's not so bad. Welcome, Sue, to Tuesdays. I only did about 4-5 before I did the challenge. Now I have to keep my focus. Your post today is so real and honest and informative. I think you have found your "Heart for Writing." I always meant to tell you, I love your blog name. If you have a name like that, you're in!

    We took very similar paths into this writing community. Jumping in with two feet into the deep end. My school is the eagles and we also follow a family of eagles via webcam. I love how you compared the vulnerable babies to the predator parents. It sounds like you are inspiring children to climb back into the nest of reading. Good luck!

    Thanks for the comments! I just heard about the webcam this morning on the radio. It is fasinating to me! My husband said he heard about it on the news yesterday! Happy writing!

Sink or swim could mean the same to many people and to others different meanings. How profound! I think in writing, to sink or swim would be to just get started and not stop.  What have you got to lose?    I went back to college when I was 39 years old to get my English degree.  I had a B.S. from college in Home Economics at that time, but was unable to find a teaching job so thought I'd add to my license so I could teach. Try going back to school with students who are approximately twenty years younger than you.  Talk about a challenge. Now there's one!   Boy, was I enthused!  They breathed life right back into me.  Most of them were very insightful and I learned to get right in with them. To cut a long story short, they would call me and I called them, and we made it through. The toughest part was creative writing.   I hadn't written in years.  No one had actually taught me to write.  The professor then wasn't teaching me either.  It was "sink or swim"

March 1, 2012 Was I blown in?

As I lay in my bed yesterday,  I could hear the wind. It made me think about what I know about the wind. I can see it, I can hear it, it can touch me, but I can't touch it! There's, the cold blustery wind in Winter, The warm Summer breeze that goes by The casual breeze that carries the smoke from the fires of leaves burning in the Fall. Those are the “fun” winds. The damaging winds of tornadoes, tsunamis, and hurricanes can hurt property and people. Hopefully we won't have that this year. A little abrupt but I need to stop.  Happy Slicing! :o)
