May 3, 2011 5th Tuesday Slice What to write about?

This will be an unusual post.  I am trying to decide what to write about and decide to just write about what comes to mind. I know it is sometimes difficult for my students to come up with ideas and I want them to know that it is sometimes difficult for me as well.

Writing isn't always easy for me either.  I have to dig deep for ideas. Sometimes it is about myself, my family, my pets (even though I have none at the moment- I can write about the ones I have had), my hobbies, my children or grandchildren.  I have to stop and think about what I am going to write about.

Today I was so excited to see the class and the students in my 6th grade Language Arts class.  They bring excitement and life to class.  I look at them and see potential for the future.  They care about each other. Oh, that doesn't mean that they are always nice to each other, but they act like siblings and they at least respect each other most of the time.

They aren't rude and nasty. I appreciate their fresh approach to life.  I know that they think I am critical of them but really I care so much about them and want them to be successful in life that I become like a mother or parent. Writing is just about putting down on paper what is on your mind or your heart.  Happy Slicing! J

  1. It is hard to find something that seems worthy to put down at times. I'm hoping you will tell your students about this post. It might make a big difference in their approach. I love the way you wrote so lovingly about them.

  2. I liked the start of your slice, like getting your engine running. There are lots of times we just need to start writing like that. It's good to show the kids, AND for me to remember when I ask them to write!
I taught 6th grade years back, sandwiched between first grade. That age is a very special age. I really enjoyed their enthusiasm. I, too, found myself being like a parent to them. Must be something about them being on the verge of adulthood. You so want them to succeed, and I always felt like this was the year that would determine how the last half of their school years would go!

  3. Well done, Sue! We all have our days. I try to write ideas down to use later--not that I'll be in the mood to write about one of these topics! You finally did realize you had something to write abour, and it was right in front of you face! Look for the obvious some times! You students are lucky to have such a caring teacher!

  4. Do share this with your students. I find when I talk to my creative writing students about having difficulty finding topics for my blog, they realize that it isn't just them. That it is OK to struggle. And sometimes, just writing whatever comes to mind turns into a good thing.

  5. There are so many times I struggle with coming up with a topic. You are right, though, you just need to write down what is "on your mind or your heart".

  6. It's interesting that you say you go into your mother mode or parent mode with the kids and that you appear to them as critical although it is your caring side and the side that sees their potential and pushes them...I don't know if I would have ever called you a critical mother for me. Maybe I was too bull-headed to notice? I'm sure they can see your fun-side too.

  8. Hello, Thank you for your interest in my blog. I truly appreciate the encouragement. I'm in the final days of teaching this year and it has been so hectic that I have not taken the time to write on my blog. I hope to get back to it very soon. No excuses. Thanks again! Happy Slicing! :o)
