January 8, 2012 New Year!

Happy New Year 2012!  Here we are in the new year.  Can it be?  Yes it is.  Time just keeps flying by. I’ve heard it said that time goes by faster as you get older and I’m beginning to believe it.  Not only do I have many things to complete but it seems less time to finish it in.  Why is that?  When my children were at home, I had so much more to acccomplish, and yet I managed to get it all done.
My parents are still living and will be 89 and 87. They had been wonderful role models for me.  It is hard to explain all the ways they had motivated, trained and inspired me.  I’ve valued their opinions and at the same time, not always agreed with them.  This morning our pastor talked about the resolutions many of us make in the new year.  I think of all the new years that my parents have seen, and all the inventions and modern conveniences that they have seen and experienced in their lifetime.  I have seen many myself, but they witnessed electricity begin - the car and airplanes were before their time, but they saw the start of the interstate highway system.
What have you seen in your lifetime?  Have you made any resolutions?  I used to make them and then they just didn’t work out so I stopped.  There’s nothing wrong with making them but I guess I wasn’t as committed as I should have been.  Now I try to be more committed to want I put my mind to and don’t say I’ll resolve to it unless I plan to commit to it. Well, that’s it for today. Hopefully I don’t wait another month before I write. Happy Slicing and Happy New Year! J

Sink or swim could mean the same to many people and to others different meanings. How profound! I think in writing, to sink or swim would be to just get started and not stop.  What have you got to lose?    I went back to college when I was 39 years old to get my English degree.  I had a B.S. from college in Home Economics at that time, but was unable to find a teaching job so thought I'd add to my license so I could teach. Try going back to school with students who are approximately twenty years younger than you.  Talk about a challenge. Now there's one!   Boy, was I enthused!  They breathed life right back into me.  Most of them were very insightful and I learned to get right in with them. To cut a long story short, they would call me and I called them, and we made it through. The toughest part was creative writing.   I hadn't written in years.  No one had actually taught me to write.  The professor then wasn't teaching me either.  It was "sink or swim"

June 21, 2011 First Day of Summer

First I have to make a few comments about a workshop I went to yesterday. It was the All Write Institute and it was so inspiring!  It's like a breath of fresh air and like the first day of spring and summer, a new beginning! It makes me feel ready to begin again.  With the Keynote, I listened to six speakers.  Some of course were the same speakers because I liked Jeff Anderson so much, I went back to hear him twice.  I felt he could help me with what I wanted to learn at this time to help my students the most at this time. With that said, summer brings in things we don't have to do; we don't have to wear winter coats, no worry about snow or shoveling, the lack of ice on the roads makes it so much easier to drive and easier to walk, we don't freeze and have cold breezes that make it hard to breathe in the cold, no fear of sickness like colds or flu, and finally we feel more like being outside (well I don't like cold) so I stay inside more in the winter.
