5th Slice March 5, 2012 What's in a name?

I'd like to give you the opportunity to find out why you have the name you have. Have you ever asked? I know that my parents named me after my grandmother.  My mom wanted to use her mother's name but because her mom died when she was 15yrs. old, she was afraid her dad might not like it so she decided to use a form of it.  The funny part of it is, he called me her nickname most of my life. So I guess it wouldn't have mattered.

I know my first name came from Hebrew and means lily.  I've always thought that was cool.  I did like my grandmother's name and wish i had it, but my name is my name and I just wanted the first part of it.  For the fact that I don't want my students calling me by my first name, I won't mention it here. Anyway, this just gives you an example of what I was talking about for a blog for anytime.

Hope you enjoy your blogging today!  Find out about your name, then about your heritage.  You'll be surprised what you learn.  Happy Slicing! :)

  1. I've been thinking about my name, especially since Terje had the post to explain her blog identity. I do know the story of my real name and my blog name and they are not the same. That may be a post for another day.

  2. I like my name now but had always hated it growing up. My name means reaper. Not exactly the coolest thing. :) Nice post.

    2. I wanted to help my students with an idea. I'd love to hear more about where your maiden name as well as where your married name came from.... :)

  3. Deborah = Hebrew for Queen Bee. My name is a variation. I never liked my name so I have never gone by the formal version. The story, according to my parents, is that after naming my older brothers with names beginning with D, they had to name #3 with a D name. I was to be DebbIe or Dennis. Debbie Reynolds was one of my dad's favorite actresses. My maiden name....well, that is a story longer than a response post should be! :D

  4. This is a good prompt for students and makes for some interesting conversations at home and then for writing.
Here's my response: I was named after my father and mother. Dad being Donald, Mom being Jean. So I am Donna Jean, which my parents thought sounded like Don and Jean, as they were called. I was eldest, and my three siblings after me all begin with a D, as Mrs. C's family. It made for great tongue twisting when my mother wanted to call one of us. She usually had to go through all the names when she was really excited (upset?). Donna means "lady" or "lady of the home".
